Gerald McRae

Gerald James McRae, of Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of New Glasgow, passed peacefully on December 2, 2016 at the Aberdeen Hospital. Born in New Glasgow, January 27, 1934, he was a son of the late James Ivor and Ruby Olive McRae. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by first wife, Dorothy Reeves; second wife, Nancy Bennett; sisters: Linda Gail in infancy; Carol Ann Sim; and Joan Brennan; step-brother, David. He is survived by daughters: Linda Keating; Debbie (Peter) Fraser; and son, Ivor (Terri) McRae; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. As a business owner/operator, he first worked with his father at McRaes Tea Room, branching out to the franchise world starting Dairy Queen in New Glasgow, then Gentleman Jims Steakhouse and six KFC outlets in northern Nova Scotia. He also operated the Copper Kettle Restaurant and Copper Penny Lounge. His greatest passion was working with Boy Scouts where he founded the 13th New Glasgow Scout Troop, going on to be Assistant Provincial Commissioner where he guided many youth through the years over all parts of northern Nova Scotia. One of his greatest moments was when he and Dorothy (founder of Beavers in Pictou County) became members of the "World of Brotherhood of Boy Scouts" based in Sweden. Giving was his way through Scouting and many organizations including Gyros, Nova Scotia Restaurant Association, and his Masonic career. He was a member and Past Master of the Sunrise Lodge #116 Antigonish, member of Western Star Lodge # 50 Westville, 32nd degree Scottish Rite and member and noble of Shriners International. He enjoyed his memories of travelling the world, Barbados and Florida with Dorothy until her passing in 1996. Mr. Boy Scouts has "GONE  HOME". Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 7-9 pm Saturday and 2-4 pm Sunday, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Funeral service following visitation at 4 pm Sunday in the chapel, with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Burial will be in Blue Mountain Cemetery at a later date. Masonic service will be held 6:30 pm Saturday in the Funeral Home. Donations in his memory can be made to Pictou County Boy Scouts Trust Fund C/O of Larry Kellock, PO Box 760, New Glasgow, B2H 5G2 or Valley View Villa Recreation Fund.
