Hugh J. MacDonald
MacDonald, Hugh Joseph passed away peacefully on Friday, 5 February 2010 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.Born on 21 April 1927, Hugh was the son of the late Daniel MacDonald and Margaret (Gillis) MacDonald. He was predeceased by his brother, Rev. Donald “Buddy” MacDonald, SFM.
Hugh grew up in Ardness, Nova Scotia. He was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) and St. Francis Xavier University where he earned a Masters degree in Education. He was an educator for forty-four years; he most recently taught and was Guidance Counselor at the Nova Scotia Community College in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Throughout his long career he also taught in Alberta and in Quebec.
Hugh was a committed member of the Roman Catholic Church community where he was involved in various committees at both the local church and diocesan level. He was a talented musician with a great love of Celtic music. He played the piano and the accordion, but he was best known for his talent on the violin. He was the director for many years of the Pictou County Fiddlers and entertained at various community events throughout the region.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Thérèse (Terry) Dufour, and his children Margaret (Duncan Macpherson) MacDonald, Antigonish and Danny (Tamera) MacDonald, Dartmouth; grandchildren: Delia and Jake Macpherson; Mackenzie MacDonald, Brian (Chelsea) and Brandon Self.
The family will receive visitors at R. H. Porter Funeral Homes Ltd., New Glasgow on Sunday, 7 February 2010 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held Monday, 8 February 2010 at 11a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Lismore; Rev. Colin MacKinnon, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Church cemetery. A reception will follow in the Church Hall.
