It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marie Ruth Dewtie, 71, Thorburn, on Sunday February 7th, 2010, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on April 18, 1938, Marie was the daughter of the late George and Margaret (Phalen) Farrell. Marie grew up in Pine Tree, Pictou County. She was a graduate from Teachers College in Truro and she went on to teach for 12 years and was a principal for 3 years. Marie was a dedicated member of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in Thorburn where she was an active member of the C.W.L, sat on parish councils and was a Sunday school teacher for over 45 years. She was an avid supporter of Knights of Columbus. Marie was the cornerstone, foundation, and pillar upon which her family was built and because of her, will forever remain strong. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by son Mark, sisters, Isabel Winifrey, Beatrice MacDonnell, brothers, Doug Farrell, and Francis Farrell. She is survived by husband William (Bill), her children Kevin, (Jan), New Glasgow; Paul, Thorburn; Jean, (Philip) Cameron, New Glasgow; Glen, (Lesley), New Glasgow; Christopher, (Jamie), Midale, Saskatchewan; sister, Helen, (Don) MacDonald, Antigonish; brothers, Bernie (Shirley) Farrell, New Glasgow; John, (Theresa) Farrell, Pine Tree; Gerald, (Joan) Farrell, Pine Tree; sisters-in-law, Jane Farrell, New Glasgow; Vie Farrell, Ontario; brother-in-law, Harold MacDonnell, Pictou County; grandchildren, Stephen and Glen Cameron, Corey and Blair Dewtie, Courtney MacAulay, Avery Dewtie, and Dyllan Dewtie; and several nieces and nephews. Marie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, god-mother, foster mother and friend to many. The family would like to extend a great deal of thanks to all of Mom’s caregivers over the past several years from Halifax, New Glasgow and Antigonish. Visitation Tuesday 7-9 pm and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home New Glasgow. Funeral mass 11 am Thursday in Saint Ann’s Roman Catholic Church Thorburn with Father Colin MacKinnon officiating. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association, Kidney Foundation or a charity of choice. Knights of Columbus Council 1667 will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 pm Tuesday for prayers. Saint Ann’s CWL will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 pm Wednesday for prayers.
