It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of
Milton “Mickey” Melanson on April 24, 2012 in Glen Haven
Manor, New Glasgow, surrounded by his loving family. Born in
Westville, N.S., Sept. 10, 1928, he was the son of the late Violet
(Langille) Melanson and Wilfred “Kid” Melanson. Mickey was
a resident of Glen Haven for the past three years having been a long
time resident of Island East River. In his younger years he was
involved in running, boxing but will be most remembered for his love
of hockey, a sport he played well into his 70’s. Mickey often
said he would still be playing in the Westville Gentlemen’s
League if a spinal injury hadn’t ended his long love of the
game. Mickey retired from Trenton Works as a supervisor having
previously spent over thirty years at Maritime Steel. In his spare
time he could be seen painting houses and was known for his
persistence in doing it right. His greatest joy was his grandchildren
and great grandchildren who he doted on. He especially loved finding a
bargain, flea markets, his time spent chatting to old friends at the
mall and coffee shops. Mickey was quick to discuss politics, local
happenings, sports and loved watching movies. He was inducted into the
Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame as a Builder, an honour he was so
proud of. An avid walker, Mickey loved nature and was delighted in
finding the first pussy willows of the season. He is survived by his
best friend and loving wife of 62 years, Anne (Cooke) Melanson, New
Glasgow; their children, Sharon, Stellarton; Mike (Joanne) Calgary;
Donna (Jim), Stellarton; Clary (Janet), Pictou; Kenny (Shirley),
Eureka; Charmaine (Kim), Chester; Kristal (Dave), Fredericton; Bernard
John, Moncton; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is also
survived by sister Helen, Lower Sackville; brothers Jim (Lynn),
Winnipeg; Chester (Shirley), Florida. He was predeceased by infant son
Andrew; brother David; brothers-in-law: Billie and Donnie Cooke,
Gerald Fraser and Art Cahoon. The family will receive visitors
Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New
Glasgow from where the funeral service will be held Friday, April 27
at 11 am with Rev Gary MacPherson officiating. Internment in Our Lady
of Lourdes Cemetery. Family flowers only with donations to Spinal Cord
Injury or N.S. Lung Association. The family would like to acknowledge
the great care, compassion and support shown to Mickey and family by
the amazing Glen Haven staff. Condolences may be sent by visiting:
