Thomas Melvin "Ike" Murray, age 88, of Abercrombie, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 in the Aberdeen Hospital. Born in Trenton, he was a son of the late Thomas and Emma Grant (Reid) Murray.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Trenton. He worked at Trenton Works, operated a grocery business in Hillside, operated a bowling alley in Dartmouth and later owned a bowling alley in Oromocto, N.B. His bowling career began in the 1940’s and included being a member of 4 Nova Scotia Championship teams, 7 New Brunswick Championship teams, including 5 consecutive, and several Maritime Championship teams. He twice represented Nova Scotia at the World Candlepin Championships and on one occasion, had the third highest average of the 1000 competitors. He had the highest average for 12 consecutive years in the Main Street League at the former Vee-Eight Lanes in New Glasgow which was considered the best league in the county and one of the best in the province. He served as President of the New Brunswick Men’s Bowling Association and President of the Maritime Men’s Bowling Association. For his accomplishments he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, only the second bowler to be inducted, the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame and the Sports Wall of Fame in Fredericton. His other sports interests included being manager of the Trenton Scotians and New Glasgow Rangers hockey teams and the Trenton Scotians Senior softball team.  He owned horses and was involved in harness racing in N.B. for many years. He is survived by his wife, Marie (MacIntosh); daughter, Sandra (Ed) Watters, Melmerby Beach; son, Lane (Jackie), Fredericton; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. He was predeceased by his first wife, Vivian (Humphreys); son, Melvin Glenn; step son, Patrick Barker; brother, Emerson Stewart "Amie". Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A public graveside service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, May 2, in the Abercrombie Cemetery with Mr. Fergie MacKay officiating. Celebration of life to follow at the Trenton Legion at 2 pm.   Special thanks to Dr. Hack and receptionist Dorothy and Dr. Farrell and the Palliative Care Team. Donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society or Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29, Trenton. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
