John Robert Kaulbach, of New Glasgow passed away April 18, 2017 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital. He was born in Middle Musquodoboit, September 16, 1924 as the last son to the late William H. Kaulbach and Margaret J. (Reid) Kaulbach. John received his early education at North School, Middle Musquodoboit and graduated in accounting from the Maritime Business College, Halifax, in 1942. He worked at Archibald Coal Co. Limited. A veteran of the Second World War, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force until his discharge in 1945 when he was employed with Pulsifer Bros. Ltd. In 1947 John joined Barrow Nicoll and Company and after five years of correspondence through Queens University, he obtained his degree as a Chartered Accountant. He became a partner of the firm in 1964 and retired from the firm Collins Barrow in 1986. John was a member of the New Glasgow Gyro Club since 1959 and served as President in 1966. He was the recipient of a Gyro Award of Merit in 2005. For many years, he served on the Gyro Swimming and Water Safety Trust. John was a member of Trinity United Church where he served as an Elder. John enjoyed gardening, family gatherings, and travelling with his wife, his children, and friends. He supported all his children and grandchildren in their various activities and careers at which they chose and work. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his wife Evelyn (Underhay) with whom he was married for 53 years, and his brother Hugh and sister Mary Fulton (Fred). He is survived by daughters, Catherine (Peter) Vissers, Milford Station, Anne (René) Matteau, Pickering, Ontario, Jane (Barry) Strachan, Timberlea, son, William (Lynn), Hilden, granddaughters, Emily and Michaela Vissers, Cara Kaulbach, grandsons, Sheldon Vissers, Robert and Richard Matteau, Adam Kaulbach, and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements have been entrusted to R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, where John’s family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Saturday. Funeral service 1 pm Sunday in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Reception to follow. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Health Foundation or a charity of choice.
