1927-2020

Rodney 'Rod' Sandall

Albert Rodney "Rod" Sandall, 92, of New Glasgow, NS, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 20, 2020.

Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Albert and Margery (Fenerty) Sandall.  He was predeceased by his beloved wife Christine in 2016, and by his brother Donald and sister-in-law Winnifred.

Survived by children, David (Sylvia) Bangkok and Calgary; Sharon, New Glasgow; Jim, Halifax; and Alice (Tim Holt), Lower Sackville; and grandchildren, Sarah (Justin), Christa, Marcus and Hayley.

Rod graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School, served in the army reserves and completed the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers’ Officers’ Training Course in Kingston, ON. He was a graduate of the NS Technical College (Dalhousie University) with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree.

Rod’s career included jobs with Ontario Northland Railway, North Bay and National Steel Car, Hamilton and in the pulp and paper industry in Ontario and Quebec.  The family moved to New Glasgow in 1966 when Rod joined Scott Maritimes Ltd., from where he retired in 1985 as Plant Engineer.

Rod had a lifelong interest in trains; no trip out West was complete without stops at Banff and Lake Louise stations, Morant’s Curve and the Spiral Tunnels.  He was a retired amateur (ham) radio operator, call sign VE1 AYI.  Rod was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church for 54 years.

While we will miss him very much, we take comfort in knowing Dad is reunited with Mum.

Due to COVID 19, there will be no visitation. A public burial service will take place at the Abercrombie Cemetery on Monday, August 24, 2020 at 2pm, with Rev. Falen McNulty officiating. Family flowers only. Donations in Rod’s memory may be made to Operation Smile Canada, 375 University Ave., Suite 204, Toronto, ON, M5G 2J5. Funeral arrangements under the direction of R.H.
