Helen Fraser

1931-2020

Helen Fraser

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Helen Isabel (Melanson) Fraser on November 2, 2020 in Northwood Centre, Halifax. Born in New Glasgow on March 31, 1931, Helen was the daughter of the late Violet (Langille) Melanson.

Helen was a resident of Northwood for the last three and a half years. Her roots were in New Glasgow where she grew up and raised her family, but she truly loved her home in Lower Sackville and being close to her devoted children.

All who were fortunate enough to know Helen were very lucky. She was loved by so many and lived a life full of kindness and generosity to all. Her family was the centre of her life and friends and family alike all looked forward to tea and laughs around the kitchen table. She could have you laughing so hard your stomach hurt. Helen enjoyed her evenings out at Bingo and if you look up the term "shop ‘till you drop" in the dictionary, her picture may very well be there. She loved her shopping trips to Maine and looked forward to them every year. She would not describe herself as strong, but all close to her know she was a lot stronger than she thought. She overcame great loss, won a battle against cancer and c-difficile ten years ago, survived a broken neck four years ago, and made it through the COVID-19 outbreak at Northwood.

Helen is survived by daughter, Janice Fraser (Debbie), and sons, Donald Fraser and Sandy Fraser (Pam); grandchildren, Tracy Wright (Mike), Erin Wright (Kory), Justin Wright (Lindsey), Amy Grinter (Jason) and Matthew Fraser; nine great-grandchildren; brother, James Melanson (Lynne), special sister-in law, Anne Melanson and special nieces, Tibby Burgess and Pam Melanson. She was predeceased by her husband of forty-seven years, Gerald Fraser; daughter, Grace (Fraser) Conatser; brothers, Milton (Mickey) Melanson, David Melanson and Chester (Hooley) Melanson.

As per Helen’s wishes there will be no visitation. Due to COVID-19 restrictions an invite-only memorial service will take place at RH Porter Funeral Home. Donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Nova Scotia SPCA or a charity of your choice.
