We are greatly saddened to announce the passing of our dear dad and brother, Joseph "Joe" Martin in the Aberdeen Hospital on January 5th 2022 with his loving daughter and sister by his side. He was born on November 16th 1940 in the Aberdeen Hospital.
At a young age, Dad’s first passion was stock car racing; he went often to Fraser's Mtn.in New Glasgow. His car was known as "Fangs" and he loved the thrill of being on 2 wheels and the demolition derby.
He started working at the Trenton Car Works at a young age and eventually became a certified welder.
In the 60's he starting playing hockey with the Stellarton Commercials hockey team and he went on to coach them where they became the Intermediate C Champions.
He later started playing for the Trenton Mooseheads. He started coaching alongside Alex Brown and team captain Wiley Riley and they went on to win the Senior B fastball title in 79 and 81. During the time between 72 and 81, he also coached the Trenton Bantams and they went on to win the N.S Championship in 73. He also coached the Trenton Midget Fastball team for a few years. In 76 he started playing with the Trenton Steelers and went on to win a championship. In the early 80's, he coached alongside Bud Anderson and manager Bob Evans and they went on to become Highland Midget B League Champs. He also played for the Stewart Jackets Old- Timers and for the Bombers Club team in 83 to become the Inter A Town Champs.
He was inducted into the Pictou County Heritage Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 with his long-time friend Cecil Avery.
In 1984 he followed his greatest passion and moved to Calgary to become a Cowboy. He had a great love for all animals especially horses. He lived on a ranch where he taught children and adults how to ride and loved every minute of it. While he was doing this, he became a member of the Steele's Scout's Commemorative Troop; they rode in the Calgary Stampede Parade many times also many other trail ride adventures. One of his greatest pleasures was to saddle up his horse and head to the mountains.
He was predeceased by his parents Harvey and Marion Martin; his maternal grandparents, William and Susan MacDonald; paternal grandparents, Frank and Mary Martin. He leaves behind his pride and joy, daughter Judy (Jim) residing in the family home; sons: Joe (Kenny), Antigonish; Jim; Trenton; beloved sister, "Nan" Annette and Alvin Jamieson, Trenton; brother, Bill Martin, High River, Alberta; brothers and sisters from his father’s second marriage: Donald Martin (Debbie), Durham, NS; Harvey Martin (Linda), Moncton, NB; Debbie and Xavier Guyot, Hawkesbury, Ont; Darline and Richard Moser, Eureka, NS; mother of his children, Margie Martin, Almont Ave, NG; mother of his grandchildren, Mariea Leil, Eureka; grandchildren, Tyler, Cassie, Keigan and Jerrika whom he absolutely adored; special great niece, Emily Mattatell and great nephew, Alex Mattatell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews; special cousin, Lesley (Buddy) and Margie MacDonald, Blue Acres.
Funeral service 2pm Saturday, August 27, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home Chapel, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. The family requests that all attending wear a mask. Burial to follow in Hillside Cemetery. Donations may be made to First United Church, Trenton or Earth Arc, 644 Heron Road, Scotsburn, NS, BOK 1RO. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, Trenton.
