William Norman "Bill" Oakes, age 93, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 19, 2022 in Gables Lodge Nursing Home, Amherst, NS.

Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Ernest and Gertrude (Phillips) Oakes. He was a retired welder from Trenton Steel Works, and a member of Saint Georges Anglican Church. During his later years, Bill enjoyed his trips to NB; spending time in the sun, boating, fishing and playing card games with the gang.

He is survived a daughter, Heidi Elizabeth Oakes (Edgar), Richibucto, NB; two sons: David Ernest (Cheryl), Westville, NS; Glenn William, New Glasgow; grandchildren: Beth Ann (Greg), Sylvester, NS; Robert William (Katelyn), Hopewell, NS; and great-grandchildren: Jessica and Abby; niece, Barb (Dave), New Glasgow; nephews: Phillip (Marg), Trenton, NS; Terri, Fredericton, NB, and Robert, Edmonton, AB.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Hazel (O’Leary), son, Dale William; companion, Catherine Campbell and a brother, Ernest "Sonny".

The family would like to thank lifelong friend, Lottie Murray, for all her comforting support and kindness over the years; the VON; the staff at Highcrest Place, New Glasgow where he resided from 2015 until his move to extended care last September 2021; and to Gables Lodge Nursing Home, Amherst for their caring compassion during his last days.

Public graveside service, 11am Saturday, May 14, in Hillside Cemetery.
