Richard Wayne "Hooch" MacAulay – age 71
It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ritchie on July 1, 2023 surrounded by his loving family in the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born in New Glasgow on January 2, 1952, he was a son of the late Robert and Shirley (Reynolds) MacAulay, Trenton.
During his lifetime, Richard worked at Commercial Equipment, Michelin in Granton and finished his working career at Cooper Tire in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Richard was an avid sports fan and athlete, often referred to as "The Ultimate Competitor" by his teammates, with several accomplishments over the years with a love of many sports. In his hockey days, he played goalie with the New Glasgow Bombers and Trenton Scotia Oldtimers. In 2009, he also achieved an induction into the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame from his success in baseball with the Maritime Softball Champion Trenton Junior Raiders where he played third base. Richard was a collector of much hockey memorabilia as a long-time supporter and devoted fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Richard was also involved with other organizations over the years including the Kiwanis Club of Fort Wayne Indiana.
Gardening and cooking were a passion for Richard. He was an amazing cook and enjoyed watching the Food Network looking for that next recipe to tweak a bit and make it his own (with lots of spice). Lobster season was his favorite which he loved to share with family and friends.
Richard is survived by sister, Elaine (Robert) Pentz, of Trenton; his brother, Kevin (Yvonne) MacAulay, of Dartmouth; daughters, Lesley (Glen) Dewtie, of Weyburn, Sask; Allison (Jonathan) MacIvor, of New Glasgow, Amber (Mike) Bradley, of PEI; grandchildren Courtney (Adam) Harbers, Avery Dewtie, Sophie MacIvor, Jaxon MacIvor; step daughter, Amy (Kevin) Freiburger; step grandchildren, Aubrey and Lydia Freiburger, Indiana; niece Kayla MacAulay; nephews, Kurtis MacAulay, Raymond Pentz; great-niece, Myla; and good friends, Stevie Hendsbee, Myles Fisher, Tom Glavine and many other special people who took time to visit in recent years.
Since moving back from Fort Wayne, Indiana to his roots in Pictou County, he fought a long courageous battle with his health with a strong will to live and never giving up. A special thanks to health care workers at the Aberdeen Hospital and Dialysis Clinic in Antigonish who showed kindness and empathy to Richard in his time of need and which will never be forgotten; Richard will always be grateful.
Visitation will take place at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55
Almont Ave., New Glasgow on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 from 6-8pm with
funeral on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at 11am at R.H. Porter Funeral
