Donald Clifford Sutherland, September 14th 1945 - August 20th 2023.
He started his career with SunLife Insurance in Halifax and soon after he received a transfer to Sydney, Nova Scotia. After a few short years, Don was offered a transfer to the Montreal Office. He took the position as Manager. The two of them made the trek to Montreal to start their 18-year adventure. After many promotions and transferring of positions, he took a transfer to the Toronto Office. They took up residence in Burlington, Ontario. After only a few short 4 years, they decided to move back to Nova Scotia to be near family.
In 1994 Don and Ruth moved into the Sutherland Family Home in Linacy. Don became invested in taking over his dad’s garden and enjoyed doing so for many years.
He was always active in the community. During the time they lived in Pictou County, he became a member of the St Andrews Church, New Glasgow; Lions Club; Masonic Lodge. Many different organizations were happy to have him on their boards and volunteer teams. He worked with the CNIB, Cystic Fibrosis and Pictou County Food Bank. Later in years, he became a member of the Linacy Fire Department as Treasurer. He enjoyed his time with the Fire Department and the members.
In 2021, Don and Ruth decided to sell the family home and move to Beaver Bank, Nova Scotia to be close to Rebecca and Lilah. While they lived in Beaver Bank, they enjoyed their daily walks in the neighborhood and local trails. Don was always in the yard doing yard work. Don joined the Masonic Lodge in Bedford and became the Clerk of Session at the First Sackville Presbyterian Church. He never could sit still for too long.
Don was predeceased by his parents, George and Hazel Sutherland of Linacy; brother, Edward Sutherland; brother, William Sutherland; sister, Margaret Murray; brother-in-law, Walter Murray; sister, Ruth Clark; brother-in-law, Brian Clark; sister-in-law, Lois Russell.
He is survived by the love of his life, Ruth Sutherland; son, Oliver Sutherland; daughter, Rebecca Sutherland and his cherished granddaughter, Lilah Sutherland; sister, Alice (John) Gillespie; sisters-in-law, Mary Sutherland, Barb Sutherland; brother-in-law, Lloyd Russell; many nieces and nephews.
Service will be held at 2pm on Sunday August 27th, 2023 in St Andrews Presbyterian Church (The Kirk), 37 Mountain Rd, New Glasgow, NS B2H 3W4. A reception and visitation will follow. Albion Masonic Lodge will meet at the Church at 1pm on Sunday to conduct their service. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
