Marijane Louise Smith, of Chance Harbour, passed away peacefully at home on September 13, 2023, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Born in New Glasgow on January 30, 1947, she was the only daughter born to the late Arnold and Veronica (Almon) Rose. She grew up and lived in the North End of New Glasgow before settling in at her much-loved cottage at the "Shore." Marijane retired in 2012 after working for over 40 years as Dr. Barclay’s receptionist.
Marijane is survived by her children, Paula, Allan (Shannon) and grandchildren, Morgan (Andrew) Westerman, Reese, Shaye and Brooke; brothers, Barry (Kathy) Rose and Colin (Linda) Rose; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents.
Marijane’s family was very important to her. She was as proud of the accomplishments of her nieces and nephews as she was of her own children. She never missed watching her grandchildren participate in their activities and the rink was where her competitive side was on full display. In contrast to her usual quiet nature, she could be counted on to let the referees know when their calls were questionable.
Marijane’s large circle of friends is a testament to her kind and generous nature. She was always happy, would do anything for anyone and took pleasure in the simple things in life.
She loved to play any game and was very competitive. If a deck of cards or a board game were brought out, she would quickly find herself a seat at the table. But, to know Marijane was to understand that playing Bridge was her passion. She had a close group of Bridge friends who took turns hosting their twice weekly games. It was not unusual for family dinners to come to a quick finish with Marijane dashing out the door to get to Bridge. She also belonged to several Bridge clubs over the years and was known to eagerly accept an invitation to any impromptu table. In more recent years, Marijane enjoyed playing the game of Mahjong with her friends, a game that she was able to share with her grandchildren. She looked forward to her shopping trips to Maine with the Bangor Girls and would always return with a ‘bargain’ buy for family members or friends.
The family would like to offer thanks to Linda MacKay and Rhonda Thompson for the care they provided; to Linda Rose, Barb King, Gwyn Bruce and Bev Holle for their daily visits; and a circle of friends who brought suppers and provided company every evening this past summer; to the VON and Palliative Care nurses who all made it possible for Mom to remain at home.
Visitation will take place from 1-3pm with service to follow at 3pm in the Chapel at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave, New Glasgow on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Reception to follow at Little Harbour Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pictou County Palliative Care Society.
