Mary Arlene Smith (nee Hughes) passed away peacefully on January 12th, 2024. Arlene was born August 9th, 1943, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Arlene was a daughter of the late Annie Elizabeth (nee Perry) and Frederick Joseph Hughes of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

Arlene cherished spending time with the people she loved and enjoying nature at the cottage on Eden Lake.

Arlene is survived by her siblings: Frederick Hughes (Mary), Margaret Cody (Steve), and David Hughes. 

Mom will be deeply missed by her children: Christina (James), Leslie (Kevin), Robert, Chad (Darcy), Jason (Shelly) and grandchildren: Allison (Justin), Samantha (Derek), Matthew (Ashley), Kelilah, Alexandra, Kolbie, Logan, Sierrah, Kali, and her great-grandchildren: Ethan, Brianna, Sadie, Liam, Nash, Tess and many loving nieces and nephews.

Arlene was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Robert Wayne "Bob" Smith and her sister, Carole (Dennis) Davidson.

The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the caring staff at Willow Lodge in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, and The Eden Alternative, for providing comfort and care to our mother. 

In keeping with Arlene’s wishes, the family will celebrate her life privately. To honour Arlene, donations may be made to Willow Lodge (Willow Lodge Foundation, 100 Blair Ave., Tatamagouche, NS, BOK 1VO), the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home.
