Melissa Dawn Mackie

Melissa Dawn Mackie

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Melissa Dawn Mackie. She passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital here in New Glasgow on Thursday, February 29, 2024.

Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on January 18, 1980, Melissa was known and loved from a very young age by so many members of the community. Led by members of the Local 1928 IBEW and Pictou County Firefighters, the Community provided ongoing support for Melissa and her family with their tireless fundraising efforts allowing her to receive a life-saving liver transplant 36 years ago. Melissa’s family will be forever grateful to all those who provided such generosity and kindness over the years, and will continue to hold a special place in their hearts for these amazing friends and neighbors.

In her younger years, Melissa could always be found enjoying a good bag of candy at the beach, laughing with her special cousin and "big sister", Jennifer along with her little brother, Faber. Melissa loved cars, and will be remembered zipping around town in her signature lime green VW Bug with the pink gas tank door, headlight eyelashes and daisy vase on the dash.

Melissa graduated from the New Glasgow High School here in her hometown, followed by her education at St. Mary’s University where she earned her degree in Psychology. Melissa continued her studies at the Counsellor Training Institute of Canada where she received her CCC designation (Canadian Certified Counsellor). She put her studies to good use when she went on to work as a Counsellor in Grand Prairie, Alberta before returning to her hometown to work at Summer Street Industries.

Melissa is survived by parents, Faber and Patricia (DeYoung) Mackie; brother, Faber (Kathryn); aunts, Penny Sartori, Jessie McLellan (deceased); uncles, George (Margie) DeYoung, Angus (Linda) DeYoung, Gary (Teresa) Mackie, Glenn Mackie (deceased) and Blaine Mackie (deceased).

Melissa will be sorely missed by her dearly loved niece, Olivia and nephew, Mathew who brought her immense joy and happiness. A special mention of her dear cousin and "big sister", Jennifer (Dave) Rushing, as well as her lifelong friends, Amanda Chisholm and Dennis Malloy, her cat, "Hurley" and canine friend, "Bob".

Special thanks to the Palliative Care Unit at Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow for their ongoing care and kindness during the last days Melissa spent with us.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no service or visitation at this time. A celebration of Melissa’s life will take place at a later date. Donations in her memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit c/o Aberdeen Health Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
