Joan Fanning

1930-2024

Joan Fanning

Joan Eileen Fanning

It is with deepest sorrow we announce that, surrounded by her loving family, Joan passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen Hospital on March 18, 2024.  She was born in Denmark, Nova Scotia on May 12, 1930 and later moved to New Glasgow and married the love of her life, Vernon. It was here that they raised their two boys and over the years proudly enjoyed supporting the many sporting events played by their sons and later by their grandchildren.

Besides her dedication to raising their family, Joan also worked at the House of Hay Restaurant in New Glasgow before working in various management positions with the Heather Motor Hotel and Restaurant in Stellarton. She had a passion for doing puzzles and watching men’s curling and Judge Judy. Joan was famous with her friends and family for her cookies and delicious baked treats (which no one seems to be able to replicate)!  She also treasured the weekend morning coffee visits that she shared with her boys.

Along with her parents and husband, Vernon, Joan was predeceased by her sisters, Millie, Mary, Jessie, Jean, Tena and Ina; and brothers, Campbell and Jimmie. She is survived by her sons: Gary (Alice) and Don (Ellen) both of New Glasgow; and is lovingly missed by grandchildren: Jason (Carla), Halifax; Keri (Jeremy), Alma; Mark (Mandi), New Glasgow; Brian (Marsha), Head of St. Margaret’s Bay; Lee (Tara), Braeshore; Dennis (Liz MacDougall), Fraser’s Mountain; Rory (Melanie Hill), New Glasgow; and chosen grandchildren, Ashley Sutherland (Keigan More), Halifax; and Amy (Kenny) Lockhart, Westville. Joan will also be deeply missed by her 15 great-grandchildren and her long-time best friend, Kaye Cameron and many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Dr. Melanie MacCara, the VON and the staff at the Aberdeen Hospital for the excellent care. The family is also very thankful for the ongoing support shown by her neighbours at The Willow.

Her family will be hosting a casual reception from 4-7 pm on Friday, March 22 nd at the R. H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Cremation has taken place, and a private family burial will be held at a later date in the spring. Family flowers only. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to Diabetes Canada (Nova Scotia) or a charity of your choice.
