Evelyn MacKay

Evelyn MacKay

The family of Mary "Evelyn" MacKay announce her passing on Monday, March 18, 2024 at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. Formerly of Hillside, she was a daughter of the late George and Theresa Fanning.

Evelyn is survived by her three children: Kevin (Anna), Scott (Janice) and Rob, and her grandchildren: Kara (Devyn Fitzgerald), Dylan (Kayley Humphrey), Braeden, Logan, Travis and Allison.  She is also survived by her siblings: Betty (Ed) O’Keefe, Walter (Kay) Fanning, Patricia "Tishie" Humphreys, Helen (Blane) Humphreys, Jack (Jacqueline) Fanning, Wayne (Margie) Fanning, and sister-in-law, Rosaria (Dom) Rovero; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John MacKay; her sister, Rita "Snookie" Mosher; her brother, Bob Fanning; as well as her brothers-in-law: Rondell "Ron" Humphreys and Earl "Sonny" Mosher.

Evelyn loved to go to the dances in her younger years. It was there that she met John, and after a courtship they married in September 1957. They built their home next door to where she grew up in Hillside and had three boys together. They enjoyed traveling and took many trips driving throughout Canada and the US.  Their favourite place was their cottage on Lochaber Lake, where they built countless family memories.

She was happiest surrounded by family, especially if the gathering was at the cottage where the door was always open, the cookie jar was always full, and there was a seemingly endless supply of "freezies" in the freezer.  There are many wonderful memories of card games, campfires, singing and so much laughter.  She found the humour in everyday life and was quite hilarious when she got going.

Evelyn never missed hockey, baseball or soccer games, or any ballet recitals, music festivals, school plays or concerts. She took great pleasure in watching any activity involving her children and grandchildren.

A special thank you to the staff of Whispering Tides at Glen Haven Manor for their care and compassion.

Visitation will be at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow on Thursday, April 4th from 2-4 and 6-8pm. There will be a private family service. Donations in Evelyn’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
