Doug Farnell

Doug Farnell

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of William Douglas "Doug" Farnell of Eight Island Lake, NS, formerly of Trenton, NS, who passed away April 15, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Dad fought a strong battle against his cancer diagnosis and continued to live life to the fullest; hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, playing with his great-children and tormenting Mom every opportunity he had.

Dad grew up in Trenton and as a teenager was involved with Air Cadets; was an active member of DeMolay; and had a huge love for animals. At the age of 16, along with his father, they purchased an old run-down hunting shack on Eight Island Lake that became known as "the camp". That old shack grew with additions, upgrades and many renovations and Dad eventually built his retirement home with Mom where they enjoyed their summers on the beautiful lake and winters in sunny Florida. Dad met Mom in 1958. They lived in Halifax while Dad worked at Sobeys, made the move back to New Glasgow where Dad was employed at the Car Works and then NS Power from where he eventually retired at the age of 54. As a couple, they were active in First United Church - Dad being an Elder. Together, they enjoyed camping, darts at the Legion, playing cards with Harvey and Judy and were original members of the Trenton Twirlers Square Dancing Group.

Dad loved being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was also a surrogate Dad to many of our friends who tagged along on weekends to the camp. He was known as "Grampie", "Gramp", and "BoBo", and loved teaching anyone who was interested; how to hunt, fish, 4-wheel, catch frogs, and swim at "the camp".

Dad will be greatly missed by his soulmate of over 63 years, Patricia "Pat" (Kehoe); daughter, Pam Farnell, Trenton; son, Stephen Farnell (Natalie), Enfield; sister, Cheryl Morrison, Trenton; grandchildren, Jessica Bevis (Colby), Devon Turnbull, Leigha Kaiser (Nick), Travis Turnbull (Denise); great-grandchildren, Kynleigh, Colson, Vera and Asher; brother-in-law, Alan Kehoe (MaryAnn), Vancouver; sister-in-law, Ena Kehoe, Riverview NB, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Stevie Farnell; in-laws, George and Kay Kehoe; brothers-in-law, Gord Atwater and Tom Kehoe.
