Jean MacGillivray

1937-2024

Jean MacGillivray

It is with great sadness that we, the family of Jean Margaret (MacInnis) MacGillivray, announce her passing on Monday, April 29th, 2024 at the age of 86.

Born in New Glasgow on June 23, 1937, Jean was the daughter of the late Alphonse and Margaret MacInnis.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Joseph "Joe" MacGillivray; a son Edward in infancy; her brothers, Ollie and Ronnie McInnis; parents-in-law, Joseph and Mary Jane MacGillivray; brothers-in-law, James Stanislaw and Charlie Harb; sisters-in-law, Joan McInnis and Eileen MacGillivray; and nephews, Michael McInnis and Lennie Knickle.

Left to mourn her loss are her daughter, Maxine MacGillivray (Gordon Sangster); sons, Joe (Janet), Allan (Betty) and Steven "Waffle" (Donna) MacGillivray; grandsons, Laurie MacDonald (Krista Fergus), Joey (Jennifer Watt), Allan and Steven MacGillivray; granddaughters, Lindsay (Ben) Jodrey, Gina, Katie, Staci and Marla MacGillivray (Luke MacMillan); and great-grandchildren, Lachlan, Calli, Scotia, Maxwell, Thomas, Sawyer, Rory, Callan and Henry. She will also be greatly missed by brothers-in-law, Gregory (Cathy) and Ivan MacGillivray; sisters-in-law, Barbara Stanislaw, Colleen (Dan) MacCormack, Dorothy Harb, Donna (Paul) Homes, Patricia (Bob) Morton, Jane Knickle; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mom enjoyed spending summers at the cottage in Chance Harbour and winters in Florida with family and friends. She loved to go dancing whenever she had a chance and was a long-time member of the Keltic Chords ladies’ barbershop chorus. In her earlier days, she enjoyed skating, swimming and playing ball in the local ladies’ league.

Mom was a busy lady. Along with bringing up her four children and babysitting for some of her grandchildren, she held various jobs over the years. She worked at the Steelworks office, Woolworths and K-Vision, as a social correspondent for the The Evening News. She worked into her early 70’s for Carlton Cards stocking the card aisles in some of the local stores and a few more jobs along the way.

We would like to thank the nurses and staff of Glen Haven Manor - especially River Glen and the recreation department. We would also like to thank Mom’s neighbours on Dover Ave. and the North End who kept an eye out for her over the years.

Visitation will be at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Funeral service will take place at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 390 High St., New Glasgow at 11 am on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
