Judy Hughes

1949-2024

Judy Hughes

Judy Mae Hughes, March 3, 1949 - May 3, 2024.

Judy passed away peacefully at home. She leaves behind her beloved partner and soulmate of 42 years, Paul Thorne.

Judy is survived by her siblings, Jim, Gary, Brenda and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Chris and Jim Hughes; sister, Aileen (Hughes) Brown; brother, Owen; and nephew, Sean.

Judy is loved by her godchildren: Jona Lynn Currie, Cait, Laura Jean and Becca Banks, extended family of nieces and nephews, cousins and her devoted friends.

Judy had many accomplishments. As a university student she travelled to Africa and the Kalahari Desert with Crossroads International. Her passion for women's wellness and community development continued throughout her life.  She was a trailblazer and instrumental in the development of services for women and children including the creation of the Tearmann House transition house in New Glasgow (along with Karen O’Hara and Kathy MacKay). Judy was the provincial coordinator for the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia (THANS) and was the first coordinator for the NS Family Violence Prevention Initiative. She also travelled across Canada participating on the Status of Women’s National Panel for Violence against Women.

Judy was never conventional; she lived life fully and in accordance with her own drummer. Please remember Judy through recalling the many wonderful stories that we shared with her.

Special thanks are extended to the care given to Judy by the Aberdeen Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit and the VON/CCA.

There will be no service. In lieu of donations, please register to be an organ donor. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
