With sadness, the family of George Peter MacQuarrie of Halifax, announces his passing in Halifax on May 28, 2024 while in the company of family. Born in New Glasgow on August 14, 1951, he was the youngest child of Dr. William and Carolyn (Wall) MacQuarrie. Raised in Trenton and New Glasgow, he went on to receive a B.Sc. Forestry from U.N.B. and a B.A. from Dalhousie University and began his career with N.S. Dept. of Lands and Forests in 1973 where he was employed until his retirement in 2016. Peter served on both CSA and Maritimes Standard development committees for certification of Sustainable Forest Management in Canada and served as Director of the Maritime Lumber Bureau, was a member of the Canadian Institute of Forestry, the Commonwealth Forestry Assoc. and received the N.S. Excellence in Public Service Award. His career took him to every province and territory in Canada as well as to England, New Zealand and Malaysia. An avid fly fisherman, he managed to wet a line in nine provinces, excepting only P.E.I. He also enjoyed golf, curling and sailing. He is survived by brother, William (Barbara) of Chance Harbour, and sister, Janet Cameron of New Glasgow; eight nieces and nephews and fourteen grand-nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will take place at Little Harbour Presbyterian Church, Little Harbour on Saturday, June 22 at 2pm. Interment in Church Brook Cemetery will follow. Donations in his memory may be made to Aberdeen Health Foundation, N.S. Salmon Assoc. (PO Box 44084 RPO Bedford, Bedford, NS, B4A 3X5) or the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
