It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Diane Elizabeth Sproull, aged 81, who left us peacefully on August 18, 2024, following complications from heart disease. She was a woman of unparalleled strength and deep love, whose presence enriched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born on May 21st, 1943, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia to Alex and Mary Johnston (Gosby), Diane, also fondly known as Mom and Nanny, was the epitome of selflessness and dedication. Her love for her family was boundless and she supported them in every way she could, always putting their needs before her own. Whether it was lending a listening ear, offering wise advice, baby-sitting, picking up people if they needed a drive, she was the unwavering rock that held her family together.
Diane started her career as a bookkeeper at 7-up in New Glasgow and brought her financial skills to Scotiabank where she was an assistant manager for 35 years, until her retirement. Lending those same banking skills and experience, Diane volunteered her management of operations at the Trenton Rink Canteen, the Bingos run by The Concerned Citizens of Pictou County and the Trenton Funfest of which she was a founding member.
During retirement, Diane continued her passion for volunteering in the community with the Aberdeen Hospital (Martha’s Place and the Cancer Society) along with countless hours to other causes close to her heart. Her commitment to helping others was recognized when she was honored with the Nova Scotia Volunteer of the Year award – a testament to her incredible impact on the community. Diane spent many hours in rinks, ballfields and recitals, cheering loudly for her son, daughter, grandchildren and friends in their favorite sports. Mom was always with Dad in their special seats saved for them at the Trenton Rink to watch the Trenton Scotian’s Junior B hockey team. As an avid bingo player, Diane found joy in the simple pleasures of life, always bringing a smile to those around her. Her competitive spirit at the bingo table was matched only by her warmth and generosity.
Diane was a devoted wife, an incredible mother, a cherished nanny and a loving sister. Mom loved to share stories of her and Dad’s travels with her brother Ralph and his wife Lynn, to Orlando, Kennedy Space Center, Clearwater/ St Pete’s Beach and many other gatherings with Ralph, Lynn and friends. Her love extended far beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of friends and neighbors who considered her family as well. Mom and Dad so greatly appreciated the love they received from the amazing people at Swiss Chalet, Sobeys Westside Pharmacy and other departments, the Trenton Rink, times with Carolyn and Barrie MacMillan, Faye and Ken MacDonald, Alfie Irving and all those special people who helped with doing their hair, snow removal, grass cutting and other support they received. Diane’s legacy of kindness, strength, and love will live on in the hearts of those she left behind and the memories from those special loved-filled experiences.
Diane will be fondly remembered for always "being there". She was a courageous and strong individual who lived life boldly, always speaking the truth, making swift decisions, and taking immediate action with unwavering confidence.
She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Edwin Sproull, Trenton; her children, Scott Sproull (Sue Ann), Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Paula Irving (Allan), Halifax; her grandchildren, Ashley Irving (fiancé Mark Vokey), Allison Irving, all from Halifax; her brother Ralph Johnston (Lynn), many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Her absence leaves a void that can never be filled, but her memory will be a guiding light for all who knew her.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to the nursing staff and physicians of the 6th floor at the QEII Infirmary Hospital for the care and compassion they gave to Mom.
The family welcomes you to a visitation from 6-8pm Thursday, August 22 and to the funeral service at 10:30am, Friday, August 23rd, both at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Avenue, New Glasgow. A reception and celebration of Diane's life will be held at Summer Street, 72 Park Street, New Glasgow immediately following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (https://www.heartandstroke.ca) or to the Trenton Scotian’s Junior B Hockey Team (donations can be made payable to Pictou County Jr B Scotians Hockey via e-transfer at [email protected], or by mail at 211 Frasers Lane, New Glasgow, NS, B2H4A5) so her spirit of giving may continue. The family also invites anyone who wishes to bring along a photo of a time or memory of Mom to post on a board at the visitation. Burial will be held at a later date.
