Douglas Dort passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, in
Palliative Care at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, NS at 77 years
of age.
Doug is survived by his wife, Isabelle (MacKay) Dort;
daughters: Susan (Philip) Kingsbury, Laurie (Mark) Partington; and
granddaughters: Amy and Clare Partington; sister, Beverly Sinclair;
nieces and nephews: Calvin (Sherri Campbell) Hayman, Pam (Kurtis)
MacGillivray, Jill (Devin) Wier and Matthew Sinclair; brothers-in-law:
Berk (Chris) Hayman and Donnie (Christine) MacKay. He was predeceased
by his parents, Omer and Anna (Ryan) Dort; sister, Peggy Hayman; and
in-laws: John and Kay (Polson) MacKay.
Always putting his family first, he was a best-friend and
loving husband to Isabelle for 53 years and a supportive and
fun-loving dad and proud papa to all his girls. Doug started his
lengthy career in emergency services in the late 1960’s with
MacDonald Bros. Ambulance Service in New Glasgow. He joined the New
Glasgow Fire Department in March 1971 and remained an active member
until his passing. He was a Constable with New Glasgow Police from
1976 to 1990. In 1990, he and Isabelle became owners of
Dort’s Ambulance Services in New Glasgow. In 2002 he became
Deputy Fire Chief and from 2009 to 2019 Fire Chief at
NGFD.
Doug held many positions at Station 33, but most important
were the friendships that the fire service provided him at 33 and
beyond. His long career serving his community remains a source of
pride for his family.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, from
2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New
Glasgow. Funeral service will be held on Thursday November 14, 2024,
at 11 am at St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 390 High
Street, New Glasgow. Family burial will follow. Family flowers only.
