Douglas Dort passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, in Palliative Care at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, NS at 77 years of age.

Doug is survived by his wife, Isabelle (MacKay) Dort; daughters: Susan (Philip) Kingsbury, Laurie (Mark) Partington; and granddaughters: Amy and Clare Partington; sister, Beverly Sinclair; nieces and nephews: Calvin (Sherri Campbell) Hayman, Pam (Kurtis) MacGillivray, Jill (Devin) Wier and Matthew Sinclair; brothers-in-law: Berk (Chris) Hayman and Donnie (Christine) MacKay. He was predeceased by his parents, Omer and Anna (Ryan) Dort; sister, Peggy Hayman; and in-laws: John and Kay (Polson) MacKay.

Always putting his family first, he was a best-friend and loving husband to Isabelle for 53 years and a supportive and fun-loving dad and proud papa to all his girls. Doug started his lengthy career in emergency services in the late 1960’s with MacDonald Bros. Ambulance Service in New Glasgow. He joined the New Glasgow Fire Department in March 1971 and remained an active member until his passing. He was a Constable with New Glasgow Police from 1976 to 1990. In 1990, he and Isabelle became owners of Dort’s Ambulance Services in New Glasgow. In 2002 he became Deputy Fire Chief and from 2009 to 2019 Fire Chief at NGFD.

Doug held many positions at Station 33, but most important were the friendships that the fire service provided him at 33 and beyond. His long career serving his community remains a source of pride for his family.
