It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of the
Rev. Dr. John A. Finlayson on Nov. 27, 2024, at the QEII Health
Science Centre, Halifax, NS. John was born in Sydney Mines on May 25,
1948, the son of Gertrude and Dwight Moody Finlayson. He earned his
B.A. Concordia University (Loyal Campus), B.Th. and M.Div. McGill
University (Presbyterian College), and Doctor of Ministry from Bangor
Theological Seminary, Maine.
John had a long career in ministry serving pastoral charges
in Thorburn, NS; Atwood and Ottawa, Ontario; Botwood, Nfld; Knowlton,
Que.; and Lower Sackville, NS. In later years, he served as a military
chaplain in Shearwater, NS, and Petawawa, Ont. He completed UN
military missions to Turkey and Eritrea, Africa. He retired from Knox
United Church, in Glace Bay in 2015.
John loved to travel and visited many countries in Europe,
the UK, and Africa, as well as, sailing on several Caribbean cruises.
He enjoyed sailing, spending time at his cottage, and doing
carpentry.
John was very kind and generous, buying gifts at all
occasions for his family and friends. He was also very sociable,
enjoying talking and sharing stories of his military experiences with
them.
He is survived by his wife Maureen (nee Quinlan) of 54 years;
his daughter, Kathryn; his son, Alex (David); his 7 grandchildren,
Beth, Sandy, Adam, Kate, Charlotte, Mary, and Andrew; his sisters,
Margie, Jane, and Becky; and his nieces and nephews and
friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother,
Thomas.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of R.H. Porter
Funeral Home, New Glasgow. (902) 752-4122. A church service will be
held at the Lyons Brook United Church, 2399 Hwy 376, Lyons Brook, at
11am Friday, December 13, 2024. Hudson Masonic Lodge will meet at
Lyons Brook United Church at 10am Friday to conduct their service. No
flowers by request. If so desired, donations in John’s
memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke
Foundation or the IWK Children’s
Hospital, Halifax, NS.
