In Loving Memory of Edwin MacPherson Sproull
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Edwin (Ed) Sproull, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, early Saturday morning, December 14, 2024. At 89 years old, Ed lived a full and remarkable life, leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication that will forever inspire all who knew him.
Born on March 26, 1935, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia to James and Gladys Sproull of Pictou Landing, Ed was a man of extraordinary character who believed in the value of hard work and the importance of family. For over 45 years, he worked as a skilled auto mechanic, a profession that perfectly matched his sharp mind and remarkable attention to detail. Known for his craftsmanship and integrity, he earned the trust and admiration of countless customers and colleagues. People came from near and far for Ed to fix the issue with their car or truck.
Ed’s greatest pride, however, was the life he built with his loving wife of 60 years, Diane. Ed and Diane’s unwavering devotion to one another was the foundation of their family, and together they created a home filled with warmth, kindness, and laughter. A proud father to his son, Scott, and daughter, Paula, and a very special Gramps to Ashley and Allison, Ed was the heart of the family. He took every opportunity to share his wisdom, his humor, and his boundless love.
Beyond his family, Ed made a profound impact on his community. He spent many years coaching hockey and softball, inspiring young athletes with his passion, patience, and dedication. Whether it was guiding a team to victory, offering encouragement in defeat, or guidance to life’s challenges, he was always there to uplift and motivate. Ed also eagerly volunteered with Trenton Fun Fest, Minor Sports, and the early Pictou County Mavericks hockey team.
Ed will be remembered not only for his talents, hard work and accomplishments but for the man he was: someone who treated everyone with respect, approached every task with care, and always found a way to bring a smile to your face with his wit and humor. Generous and selfless, he was the first to lend a hand, whether it was fixing a car, offering advice, or simply being there when you needed him most. And even in his toughest times at the hospital, he was always appreciative with a thank you to the nurses and quick to make a joke to lighten things up.
He is survived by his son, Scott Sproull (Sue Ann), Fort Lauderdale, Florida; daughter, Paula Irving (Allan), Halifax; his grandchildren, Ashley Irving (fiancé Mark Vokey), Allison Irving, all from Halifax; his sister, Carolyn MacMillan (Barrie), New Glasgow; brother-in-law, Ralph Johnston (Lynn); many nieces and nephews and dear friends who will forever cherish the moments they shared with him. Ed’s absence leaves a void that can never be filled, but his memory will be a guiding light for all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Diane (Johnston); and brothers, Douglas and Allison.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to Ed’s amazing caregivers, Cheryl, Beth, Cathy, Krista-Lee and Kay; the nursing staff at the Aberdeen Hospital and Valley View Villa for the care and compassion they gave to Ed. Also, a huge thanks to those family and friends who visited Dad frequently with goodies for him to eat, a smiling face and special stories to brighten his day.
The family welcomes you to a visitation from 6-8pm Wednesday, December 18, and to the funeral service at 11am Thursday, December 19, both at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Avenue, New Glasgow. A reception and celebration of Ed’s life will be held at Summer Street, 72 Park Street, New Glasgow, immediately following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in his memory to the Canadian Lung Association or to the Trenton Scotian’s Junior B Hockey Team (donations can be made payable to Pictou County Jr B Scotians Hockey via e-transfer: [email protected], or by mail at 211 Frasers Lane, New Glasgow, NS, B2H4A5) so his spirit of giving may continue. The family also invites anyone who wishes to bring along a photo of a time or memory of Dad to post on a board at the visitation. Burial will be held at a later date.
Dad’s life was a testament to love, hard work & commitment, and the joy of helping others. Though his presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
Rest in peace, Dad. You will be forever missed and never forgotten.
