The heart of our home and family will never be the same as we so sadly announce the passing of our Mom, Gram, great-grandmother and friend, Eva Jeanette Dee, at the age of 84 in the Aberdeen Hospital on January 17, 2025.
Born in New Glasgow on February 25, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Pipe Major Fraser Holmes and Violet Holmes. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mom married her high school sweetheart, Billy Dee, in 1957 and together raised five children: three sons and two daughters.
In her early years, her father taught her how to play the bagpipes which led her to be a proud member of the Ceilidh Girls Pipe Band and later the Pipe Major for the Fraser Holmes Memorial Pipe Band. She also mastered highland dancing, winning many trophire and dancing for the Queen of England.
Although Mom developed arthritis in her early teens, she didn’t let that stop her from mastering the art of a perfect pie crust, so tender and flaky, it was second to none; as well as her biscuits and cookies. She baked for all of us until her hands wouldn’t let her. She was one tough cookie!
Being the kind, gentle soul she was, she always had an ear for listening, a shoulder to cry on and open arms to give a big comforting hug for reassurance. Her family was her world as she was ours.
She leaves behind her sons: Billy (Marjorie), Port Howe; Kevin (Jennifer), Stellarton; Roger (Barb), Ontario; and a daughter, Gail (Dan) Jardine, Trenton; grandsons: Jeff and Corey Bowser, Travis, Tyler and Dougie; granddaughters: Heather, Brittany Wall, Nicole MacNeil, Katelyn, Robin and Elisha; along with numerous great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Aubrey (Ethel) Dee.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband, daughter, Jeannine; grandson, Todd; brothers: Andrew and Alex Holmes; sister-in-law, Shirley Callaghan; brothers-in-law: Herbert and Sandy Dee; special friend, Reg Skidmore.
There will be no visitation by request. The funeral will be held for family and friends at 2pm Tuesday, January 21, in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Donations may be made to UNICEF or a charity of choice.
I Made it Home
I just wanted to let you know that I made it home. Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh, so new. I wish that you could close your eyes so you could see it too. Please try not to be sad for me. Try to understand. God is taking care of me…I’m in the shelter of His hands. Here there is no sadness, and no sorrow, and no pain. Here there is no crying and I’ll never hurt again. Here it is so peaceful, when all the angels sing. I really have to go now…I’ve just got to try my wings.
