It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Marjorie Brander on March 16, 2025, at the age of 79. Karen passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, leaving behind a legacy of community service, cherished friendships, and a life well-lived.
Karen was born on June 23, 1945, in Fox Harbour, the beloved daughter of Axel J. Jensen and K. Jean Robertson (Jensen). She carried her small-town roots with pride and exemplified the values of kindness, hard work, and generosity in every facet of her life.
Karen dedicated herself to countless causes and activities that enriched her community. A founding member of the Little Harbour Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department and an integral part of the Little Harbour Community Centre, Karen was always at the heart of initiatives to support her neighbours. She also served as a leader, trainer, and mentor in Scouts Canada for over 20 years, attending workshops and clinics and earning her certification as an Assistant Canoe Trainer.
Her passion for fitness and camaraderie led her to help establish Little Harbour Pickle Ball, where she not only excelled on the court but also helped new members feel welcome and confident in their game. Karen could hold her own against players of any age, bringing energy and joy to every match.
Karen worked at Michelin for 32 years, retiring in 2005 at the age of 60. In addition to her professional contributions, she was an active participant in Home and School programs and fundraised tirelessly for causes like Crohn’s & Colitis research.
An adventurer at heart, Karen loved the outdoors, whether biking, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, skiing, or camping. She found solace in her garden, joy in body-strengthening yoga, and pride in her perfectly groomed yard, especially during the holiday season when her elaborate Christmas decorations lit up the neighbourhood. Karen also enjoyed movies with friends, dining out, and spending time with her special Tuesday morning group at The Bean coffee shop.
Karen was deeply committed to family. Karen is survived by her children, Patricia Karen Brander (Miles Whittingham) of Ottawa, and their two children, Avery and Eden; and Stephen Darrell Brander of Moncton, and his children Ethan, Sophie, and Phoebe (with their mother, Jodi Johnson). She is also survived by her brother David (Karen) Jensen of St. Catharines, sister Nancy Hollis of Westville, and her faithful dog, Willow.
Karen was predeceased by her husband, Darrell Carl Brander; her brother Gordon Jensen; sister-in-law Dianna Jensen; brother-in-law Michael Hollis; and sister-in-law Eleanor Fillmore. She leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family who will forever cherish her memory.
Karen’s friends and neighbours were like family to her, offering love and support throughout her life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be from 5pm-7pm Saturday, March 22, 2025 in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Funeral Service will be on Sunday March 23, at 2 pm, also at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Little Harbour Presbyterian Church /Church Brook Cemetery. Reception to follow in the Little Harbour Community Center.
Karen’s light, laughter, and love for her community and family will remain in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Little Harbour Community Centre, The Ladies Auxiliary of the Little Harbour Fire Department or The Canadian Cancer Society.
