It is with heavy hearts that the family of Charles "Charlie" Angus Matheson of Trenton announce his peaceful passing at the age of 89 surrounded by his children and his lifelong and loyal friend, Barry Trenholm, on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
Born in Westville, Charlie was the son of the late George and Hazel Matheson. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Cheryl Matheson; his first wife, Norma (Whitewood); his second wife, Bonnie (MacDougall); his brothers: Vernon Matheson, Phillip Matheson, and Dick MacLennan.
Charlie is survived by his children: Andrew Matheson (Marilyn) of Stellarton, Linda McMahon (Mike) of Asheville, North Carolina, and Meryl Matheson-Nichol (Mark) of Caribou. He was a proud grandfather to Melanie, Andrew, Charles, Blaire, Bridget, Laurie, and Mitchell. Charlie is also survived by his brother, Geordy (Dawn) Matheson.
Affectionately known by many as "Charlie the Carburetor Guy", he operated C.A. Matheson Irving from the top of town on Provost Street in New Glasgow where he serviced the cars of Pictou County residents for many years until his retirement in 2007. Charlie was a proud tradesman whose mechanical expertise was matched only by his passion for entertaining.
Charlie was an avid sportsman who loved fishing, hunting, and spinning long tales with the boys at the camp. He found great joy in singing, especially with the Stellarton Male Chorus, and in his many years of performing with barbershop quartets. Many will remember his "singing valentines" and the joy he brought through music. A showman at heart, Charlie lit up every room with his voice, laughter, and charm.
He loved nothing more than sharing mints, jokes, and hunting and fishing secrets with his grandchildren. His love of sports endured throughout his life; he played hockey and baseball in his younger years and, in later life, became a dedicated fan, never missing a chance to watch a game with his best friends by his side.
In retirement, Charlie stayed as active as ever. He could be found enjoying breakfast with the boys on Saturdays, singing with the choir at the First United Church in Trenton, or attending meetings with the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Westville. A community man, a storyteller, and a faithful friend, Charlie lived life with energy and heart.
A proud inductee into the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame, Charlie leaves behind a legacy of laughter, loyalty, and love.
A Celebration of Life will take place from 2-4pm Saturday, April 12, at the Trenton Legion.
