Donald Edward "Duke" MacDonald, age 88, of New Glasgow, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2025 in the Aberdeen Hospital. Born in New Glasgow on October 21, 1936, he was a son of the late Roderick J. and C. Elizabeth MacDonald. 

He attended St. John’s Academy, St. F.X.  University, Dalhousie University and the Maritime College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1961. He spent most of his working life as owner-operator of Steeltown Pharmacy in Trenton. In 1991, he joined Medical Hall Pharmacy in Stellarton from where he retired in 2005. 

He was active in sports from an early age, especially baseball, and later, golf and curling. He enjoyed playing cards with the Friday night card club and the crib tournament hosted by Big Al as well as time spent with family and friends at the cottage in Lismore.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church and a member of the former Christ the King Church, Trenton, where he served in many ministries such as Parish Council, Finance Committee, Eucharistic Minister and Lector.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Ross); infant son, Thomas; brothers: Francis and Louis; sisters-in-law: Belle MacDonald, Lolly MacDonald; brother-in-law: Lonnie Bates. 

He is survived by son, Darren (Trisha), New Glasgow; grandchildren: Abby and Markus MacDonald, New Glasgow; Craig Tobin, Calgary, AB; sisters: Ann Bates, Swampscott, Mass; Mary (Al) Sutherland, New Glasgow; brothers: John "Bun" (Donna), Westville; Neil, New Glasgow; Lawrence, Trenton; Willie (Marion), New Glasgow; special sister-in-law, Ellen (Keith) Langille.

There will be no visitation by request. Funeral mass 11am Wednesday, September 24, in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow, with Fr. Godwin Kalu presiding. Burial in Christ the King Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (NS), Chalice (Bedford) or The Lodge That Gives. Arrangements are under the direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
