Ann Karen MacLean, October 1, 1945 – November 3, 2025
Ann Karen MacLean (née Hukkala), age 80, passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, on the evening of November 3, 2025. Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late Heikki "Henry" and Helmi (Mikkola) Hukkala.
Ann spent much of her childhood on the family farm alongside her parents and brothers. It was in those early years that she developed her lifelong love of baking and cooking - a gift she shared generously with family and friends. She continued to bake for others and send food home with people right up until her hospitalization earlier this year.
After completing her training at the Lakehead Registered Nursing Assistant Centre in Thunder Bay (formerly Fort William), Ann began her career as a nursing assistant. Her work eventually brought her to Marathon, Ontario, where she met the love of her life, Murdock MacLean. The two were married in 1967 and soon after moved east to Pictou County when Murdock accepted a position with the newly opened Scott Maritimes pulp mill.
Settling into their new community, Ann first worked at The Met Department Store in the Aberdeen Mall before embracing her favourite role - creating a warm, welcoming and loving home where family and friends always felt cared for. She found joy in simple pleasures: gardening, her bowling league, crafting projects, and hosting countless family holiday dinners that became treasured memories.
Ann was at her happiest when others were fed, comforted, and looked after. Her kitchen was never just a kitchen - it was how she loved people.
She is survived by her daughter, Shannon MacLean; her son, Murdock J. MacLean; and her cherished grandsons, Ben MacLean and Brandyn Benjamin (Olivia). She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Kaarlo and Rena Hukkala; sisters-in-law, Connie Hukkala and Beverly Rivest (Al); and nieces, Liisa (Jeff), Kaari (Jason), and Heather (Darcy), along with their children. Ann will also be deeply missed by her constant companion over the last nine years, her cat, Angie.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Murdock; her parents, Heikki (Henry) and Helmi Hukkala; her brother, Kalevi Hukkala; and her parents-in-law, Chester and Marion MacLean.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the many medical teams who cared for Ann during these last several months in hospital - especially the staff of the Aberdeen Hospital Transitional Care Unit and, though it was a short stay, the Palliative Care Unit. You cared for and protected her when she needed it most. We are grateful, always.
Honouring Ann’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. The family will come together in an intimate service, under the direction of Rev. Donna Tourneur and R.H. Porter Funeral Home to celebrate her life and the love she shared with others.
