Daniel Hugh Stewart
Daniel was born in New Glasgow on 30 May, 1930 and passed
away 6 November, 2025 at the Palliative Care Unit, Aberdeen Hospital,
New Glasgow, after a brave battle with Mesothelioma. He was a son of
the late Daniel Hugh and Mary Aldora (Gerrior) Stewart and the last
surviving member of his family.
Daniel lived and worked in Saint John, NB where he met and
married his love, Shirley Ricketts.
Daniel attended Nova Scotia Agricultural College, class of
1956. He also attended Nova Scotia Teachers’ College. Dan
taught Industrial Arts at schools in Trenton and
Westville.
Daniel and Shirley were members of the Pictou County Heart
and Stoke Support Group and U.C.T. Dan belonged to the N.S. Retired
Teachers Organization and the N.S. Highland
Association.
He enjoyed playing the bagpipes with the Na Gaisgid Pipes and
Drums Band. Dan enjoyed his workshop, gardening, skiing, skating and
long walks.
Dan loved his family dearly and enjoyed every minute with his
grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley; sons:
James (Audra), Stellarton; Darren (Angela), Newburne, Lunenburg Co.,
NS; daughter, Jean Ann (Eric Poot), Toronto, ON; grandchildren:
Glenda, Daniel, Zachary; sisters-in-law: Judith Feltus (Robert),
Sussex, NB; Joan Stewart, Toronto, ON; brother-in-law, Edward
"Ted" Ricketts (Lottie), Oromocto, NB; several nephews and
nieces.
Besides his parents, Daniel was predeceased by two brothers,
Douglas and Alvah; four sisters, Mary, Laura, Florence and Margaret;
sister-in-law, Mary McGuire; brother-in-law, William
Ricketts.
Visitation 1-2pm Saturday, November 15, with Words of
Remembrance at 2pm, followed by a reception, all in R.H. Porter
Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Donations would be
appreciated to the VON or Pictou County Palliative
Care Society.
