Douglas Joseph Stewart Campbell, born in New Glasgow, NS, passed away on April 25, 2026 in the Halifax Infirmary after a prolonged illness. Doug was the son of Sheldon (Punny) and Shirley (MacKay) Campbell of Pictou Landing and brother to George (Marilyn), Bruce (Dolly), Debbie and Sheri (Calvin). He is survived by his wife, Trudy (MacLeod); sons, Brendon (Jenn), Sean (Lesley) and granddaughters, Nora and Mya. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Roger (Susan) MacLeod; sisters-in-law, Donna (Robert) Weaver, Lori (Donald) Bourque and Wendy Mathias. Doug was predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, Douglas and Treva MacLeod and his brothers-in-law, Bruce MacLeod and A.J. Mathias.
Doug was an athlete his entire life. He began running at age 14 and switched to walking only a couple of years ago. With help from his cousin, Fergie MacKay, he competed through high school eventually winning the Provincial High School Track and Field Championship. He played varsity hockey in university and ran track and field. He was awarded Athlete of the Year at Dalhousie University. In his working life, he played on company teams for soccer, baseball and hockey, as well as coaching youth hockey. When other people would think of slowing down, he took up paddling with the Cheema Masters Paddlers in Waverly, NS. There he found a solid group of friends who trained together on and off the water all year round.
Doug had a curious, active mind as well. He completed a Master of Science in Energy in 2018 and a Master of Applied Economics in 2022.
Doug had a fifty-year career in Mechanical Engineering. He worked in the power generation industry with many companies, beginning his career with Combustion Engineering until he retired at Nova Scotia Power in 2020. He then started his own consulting company on renewable energy.
The family would like to thank all staff on the Cardiac ICU units of the Halifax Infirmary for their compassion and care of Doug during his illness. Special thanks to Doug’s sister Debbie for the support to his wife while together they advocated for Doug during his hospitalization.
Visitation will be at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, NS on Friday May 1, 2026, from 4-7pm. We are requesting family flowers only. Funeral service to take place at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 5756 Pictou Landing Road, Trenton, NS on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 2pm. Refreshments will follow in the Church Hall.
