It is with profound sadness that the family of "Jack" John Ross MacArthur announces his passing on May 24, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born in Trenton and raised on First Street, Jack grew up alongside his parents and two siblings, beginning his working life as a young lad at the King Street warehouse. His path soon led him to the Air Force, where he proudly served his country. Before taking flight on that new chapter, Jack met the love of his life, Dolores Polley. Together, they travelled the world, building a life rich with adventure, devotion, and deep companionship.
Jack and Dolores welcomed four children—each born in a different province or country as the family journeyed through their early years. In 1967, they settled into the home that would become the heart of their family for decades to come. Jack lived a full and prosperous life of 93 years, enjoying dancing, singing, and a long career with Nova Scotia Power, from which he eventually retired. He cherished his winters spent in Florida, his time at the cottage in Black Point, and days at the camp in Black Brook.
A man of faith and community, Jack was a devoted member of First United Church in Trenton, where he served on many committees and sang graciously in the choir for countless years. His voice, his presence, and his dedication to the church were a blessing to all who worshipped alongside him.
For fifty years, Jack was an avid square dance caller, sharing his talent and enthusiasm with dancers around the country. He brought joy to countless square dancing clubs, where his voice and energy became a beloved part of the community. In his spare time, Jack devoted many hours to exploring his family history, pursuing genealogy with the same dedication and curiosity that he brought to every part of his life.
Above all, Jack was most proud of his family. He treasured every moment spent with them—whether hunting, fishing, square dancing, singing, or simply being present with the people he loved. His devotion to his family remained steadfast right to his final moments.
To say he leaves a hole in our hearts is an understatement. Jack will be deeply missed by his wife of 72 years, Dolores MacArthur (Polley); his children: Jacqueline (Wallace) Crosby, Scott (Elizabeth) MacArthur, Ross (Jackie) MacArthur, and Stephen (Angela) MacArthur; and his sisters‑in‑law, Janet Polley, as well as Marilyn (David) Croke. He is lovingly remembered by nieces: Carolyn (Larry) Deveau and Cathy (Rod) Smith; nephews: Rob (Terri) Middlemiss, Daryl (Ginny) MacArthur, Michael Polley, Matthew Polley, and Mitchell (Kait) Polley; grandchildren: Tara Crosby (Greg), Christa Crosby (Jason), Angela MacArthur-Gillman (Dan), Ian MacArthur (Kelsie), Garret MacArthur (Caitlin), and Alison MacArthur (Steve); and eleven beautiful great‑grandchildren: Jenna Sullivan (Justin), Aiden Sullivan, Jacob Webber (Amber), Jack Sullivan, Brooks MacArthur, Ellis MacArthur, Hayes MacArthur, Mila MacArthur, Calla Gillman, Gracie Gillman and Connor Gillman.
Jack was predeceased by his parents, Lila and Ross MacArthur; his siblings, James Arthur "Art" MacArthur and Christine "Dee" Doris Middlemiss; his parents‑in‑law, Helen and Cecil Polley; brothers‑in‑law, Scott and Robert Polley; and his infant daughter, Gail MacArthur.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Tanya, Jennifer, and Tammy from Earth Angels for their compassionate care, which allowed Jack to remain in his home as long as possible. Deep gratitude is also extended to Palliative Care—especially Rachel—and to the VON for their support.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 pm Wednesday at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 73 High St., Trenton. A funeral service will take place 2pm Thursday, at First United Church, 81 High St., Trenton. Donations in Jack’s memory may be made to First United Church in Trenton.
